How we pick
This page is the full version of what we touch on elsewhere: exactly how a guide gets made, how the Gift Finder decides what to show you, and how reminders work. We'd rather explain the machinery than ask you to trust a badge.
How guides get made
Every guide is hand-organized around a real situation — a person, an occasion, a budget — not pulled from a "best of" aggregator or ranked by what pays the highest commission. Each pick carries a specific, concrete reason it made the list, and the picks we're most confident in get an honest "skip it if…" line too: the one situation where we'd tell you to buy something else. A guide that only ever says yes isn't giving you real advice.
We'll say this plainly because we think it matters: guides on this site are drafted with AI assistance and then edited by a human before they publish. We'd rather tell you that directly than have you guess, or find out some other way. The editing step is where a pick gets cut if the reasoning doesn't hold up, and it's the same step that keeps every "why" specific instead of generic.
Guides get reviewed periodically, not just written once and abandoned — each one carries a published and last-updated date so you can see how current it is.
How the Gift Finder matches you
The Gift Finder doesn't use a black box — it scores every gift in our catalog against what you tell it, in plain, explainable steps:
- Budget is a hard filter. If a price band doesn't match what you selected, the item is dropped before scoring starts — we won't show you a $150 splurge when you asked for under $25.
- Recipient (her, him, mom, a coworker, and so on) carries the most weight. An exact match to who you're shopping for scores highest; gifts we've tagged as suiting "anyone" still qualify, just lower.
- Occasion (birthday, Christmas, housewarming…) adds more signal on top — an item tagged for the occasion you picked scores higher than one that's only a general "just because" gift.
- Interests you select (cooking, tech, outdoors, and the rest) add further points for each one an item shares with you — the more overlap, the higher it ranks.
- If you type a description, we also match your words against each item's name, its "why," and its guide title, and add that as a smaller signal.
Every surviving item gets a total score, and we sort highest to lowest. Nothing is promoted for being an affiliate link with a better payout — the scoring only looks at fit.
How reminders work
If you create a free account, you can save the people you shop for along with the dates that matter — birthdays, anniversaries, anything custom — and we'll email you a reminder about a week ahead of time, with gift ideas relevant to that person already attached. One email per occasion, no spam, and you can unsubscribe or delete your account any time.
