How the Gift Finder ranks its suggestions
By Ismail A. · Updated
The Gift Finder follows fixed rules you can check. Every one is listed here, with the real numbers from the code.
What decides the order of results?
A plain points score. The recipient adds up to 3 points, the occasion up to 2, each matching interest 2, and words you type up to 3 each. Budget is a filter, not a score. Ties go to alphabetical order. Affiliate commissions never affect the order.
Heads up: our guides are reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through the links below — it never changes what we recommend or what you pay. How this works
What you enter and how much it counts
Everything you choose in the Gift Finder earns points. The more points a gift has, the higher it sits:
- Recipient: 3 points if the gift is tagged for exactly that person, 1 point if it suits anyone. If it is neither, it is dropped.
- Occasion: 2 points for the occasion you picked, 0.5 points if the gift is tagged just because. Otherwise it is dropped.
- Interests (up to 3): 2 points for each chosen interest the gift carries. If it carries none of them, it is dropped.
- Free text (optional): every word must appear in the gift's name, its reason or its guide title, or the gift is dropped. A hit in the name earns 3 points, a hit in the reason 1 point, a hit only in the guide title 0.5 points.
- Budget: no points at all, because it is a filter (see below).
Same score? The gift whose name comes first alphabetically goes higher.
Budget is a hard filter
If you pick one or more price bands (Under $25, $25–50, $50–100, $100+, Splurge), every gift outside them is removed before anything is scored. A gift cannot buy its way past the filter with a high score.
How repeats are limited
After scoring, the Gift Finder shows at most 30 results. So that one idea cannot fill the list, it takes at most 2 gifts from the same guide and at most 3 from the same main category (the first interest a gift is tagged with).
If that leaves fewer than 30 although more gifts match, the category cap is relaxed first and then the guide cap, so the list still fills up.
No two neighbouring cards ever come from the same guide. Otherwise the order stays the order of the points.
Where the gifts come from
The Gift Finder only chooses from the 392 gifts in our 31 guides, which we wrote and checked by hand. Both numbers are counted from the catalogue when the site is built. It invents nothing and pulls nothing from the web.
What is not used
None of these play a part in the order:
- Affiliate commissions never affect the order, and no gift earns points for paying more.
- Sponsorship: nobody can buy a place in the results.
- Price: inside your price band, price adds no points.
- Popularity: sales, ratings and clicks are not used.
- Personal data: only what you pick in the quiz is scored. The Gift Finder sends your answers nowhere; the gifts are sorted in your browser.
Every product button is an Amazon Associates link to Amazon, as set out in the affiliate disclosure. If you buy through one we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, but it has no say in the order.
Limits
The catalogue is finite: the Gift Finder can only show what we have included, and for a very unusual request it may find nothing. It is rule-based and does not write text. Every link points to a product page we checked by hand when we added it, and an automated monitor tries to re-check them all regularly. Availability is re-checked, not guaranteed.
