How Much to Spend on Three Kings' Day Gifts

By Ismail A. · Updated

Set one total per child for the whole season, then split it: in families where the Three Kings bring the main present on 6 January, about two thirds go to Kings' Day and one third to Christmas. As our own guideline, a middle budget is 100 to 200 euros per child in Spain, 1500 to 3000 Mexican pesos in Mexico, or $100 to $200 elsewhere. Adults usually exchange something small.

What is Three Kings' Day?

Three Kings' Day (Día de Reyes) is the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. In Spain and much of Latin America, the Three Wise Men bring presents to children on the night of 5 to 6 January. Children write them a letter beforehand and leave their shoes by the door, a window or the tree, sometimes with a snack for the Kings and water for the camels.

In Spain it is the big gift morning for many children. In Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Uruguay and elsewhere it sits alongside Santa Claus, and each family decides which of the two brings more. The day ends with a ring-shaped sweet bread (roscón in Spain, rosca in Mexico) with a small figure baked inside; in Mexico, whoever finds it hosts a tamales dinner on 2 February.

How much should you spend per child?

There is no official figure, so this is our recommendation rather than survey data. Decide what you want to spend per child across Christmas and Kings' Day together, and work down from there. A middle budget is roughly 100 to 200 euros in Spain, 1500 to 3000 pesos in Mexico and $100 to $200 elsewhere. Fix the number before you look at toys, not after.

How do families split gifts between Santa and the Three Kings?

The simplest rule is that one gift-bringer brings the main present. If the Kings lead in your family, Santa brings something small at Christmas, such as a book, clothes or a game for the holidays, and the Kings bring what the letter asked for. In budget terms that is roughly one third for Christmas and two thirds for 6 January.

There is a practical case for the reverse. By 6 January only a day or two of school holidays are left, so a present that needs hours of play, like a console, a big building set or a bike, gets more use if it arrives at Christmas. Many families in Spain therefore keep the Kings for presents that work any time of year.

How many presents do the Kings bring?

Fewer than you might think. Many families use the four-gift rule: something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. It keeps the letter from turning into an endless list and stops the budget from scattering across small things nobody remembers by February. Two or three well-chosen presents already make the morning feel full.

When should you buy Three Kings' Day gifts?

Buy them with the Christmas presents, in the first half of December. The most-wanted toys sell out in the weeks before 6 January, and in Spain the big chains usually start their January sales on 7 January, so waiting saves nothing. In 2027, 6 January falls on a Wednesday: presents must be at home by the evening of Tuesday 5 January, and international parcels to Latin America can take longer than promised.

Do adults give each other Kings' Day presents?

In many families, yes, but far smaller ones than the children get. Our guideline is one small present per person, around 15 to 30 euros in Spain or 200 to 500 pesos in Mexico. In a large family, a Secret Santa for adults only, drawn in December and opened on 6 January, keeps the cost down and leaves the morning to the children.

What if you are a guest in a family that celebrates Reyes?

Ask the parents which day brings the main presents before you buy anything for the children, and follow their split. If you are staying over the night of 5 January, a small present for each child left with the others is a kind gesture. Bring something to share with the roscón or rosca, and never hand a child a present early: it belongs to the morning.
